How to Choose a Cafeteria Partner

Choosing who feeds your school or office is a bigger decision than it looks — and the glossy proposal rarely tells you the whole story.

I've been on both sides of this. Handing your food operation to someone else takes real trust, and the wrong choice is a headache you'll deal with every single day. So before you sign anything, here are the questions worth asking — the ones that actually separate a real partner from a nice presentation.

"Is the food fresh — and where is it made?"

Ask where and when the food is prepared. Fresh, same-day cooking is a completely different thing from food made hours earlier and reheated. This one answer tells you more than an entire brochure.

"How do you handle hygiene — really?"

Anyone can say "we're hygienic." Ask them to actually walk you through it. A serious partner will happily explain their process, step by step. A vague, hand-wavy answer is a warning sign worth taking seriously.

"Can you build around us?"

Your needs aren't the same as the next client's. A good partner asks about your people, your timings, your budget and your dietary needs before they start talking about menus. If they lead with a fixed package, be a little careful.

"Will the quality still be there in six months?"

This is the real test. Plenty of providers start strong and then quietly slip. Ask about consistency, about how they handle feedback, and about what happens when something goes wrong — because at some point, something will.

"Who do I actually talk to?"

When there's a problem at 8 a.m., do you reach a real person or a call centre and a ticket number? Reliable, human communication is often the difference between a small hiccup and a genuinely bad week.

One last thing to notice

Pay attention to how they treat the relationship itself. In food, you're not a one-time customer — you're trusting someone with your people, every day, for a long time. The best partners treat it that way from the very first conversation, long before you've signed anything.
